When I started looking at this, I had no idea how
controversial a topic this is. I made
the mistake of looking at more than one source and discovered that historians tend
to be divided into two camps, which we might describe as the “Decline and Fall”
camp and the “Change and Continuity” camp.
There is not much disagreement on the facts, but a lot of disagreement
on how to interpret them. The source that I have principally used for this is Britain
after Rome by Robin Fleming.
